Written by Kent Blazy and Garth Brooks and produced by the legendary Allen Reynolds and released on September 9, 1989 on Garth’s first album, Garth Brooks, the song became Garth’s first number-one single on the US Billboard Country Singles Chart. The song received the Favorite Country Single recognition at the 1991 American Music Awards. Ronan Keating’s version went to Number 1 in the UK, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Norway and charted globally. The song has been recorded by many artists including Renato Russo, Joose, Westlife, Engelbert Umperdinck, Barry Manilow, and Claudio Jung. The song has become a staple on the reality television circuit where it was sung by third place finisher Elliott Yamin in season 5 of American Idol, Shayne Ward winner of The X Factor season 2, Damien Lieth of American Idol 2006, and Kevin Skinner on America’s Got Talent.
