The song received the Favorite Country Single recognition at the 1991 American Music Awards. Ronan Keating’s version went to Number 1 in the UK, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Norway and charted globally. The song has been recorded by many artists including Renato Russo, Joose, Westlife, Engelbert Umperdinck, Barry Manilow, and Claudio Jung. The song has become a staple on the reality television circuit where it was sung by third place finisher Elliott Yamin in season 5 of American Idol, Shayne Ward winner of The X Factor season 2, Damien Lieth of American Idol 2006, and Kevin Skinner on America’s Got Talent.
